Vitamin B1 is also known as Thiamine.
It helps the body cells to convert carbohydrates into energy and is important
for the correct functioning of the heart, muscles and nervous system.
Thiamine is contained in fortified breads, cereals, whole
grain, lean meat, pasta, fish, dried beans and peas. A lack of this vitamin
can cause weakness, fatigue and nerve damage. If vitamin B1 is totally absent
in the diet, this may lead to a disease called beriberi (combination of
vitamin and protein deficiency with paresthesia, cramps, weak
muscles). |
